A few years ago there was
a program that was somewhat successful. It was put in place in several
major cities across the country. Remember it? It was named "Scared
Straight". For
those who may not be familiar with it a group of "at risk youth" were
taken to a State prison and introduced to some of the 'hardcore'
inmates. The purpose was for them (inmates) to
show the young offender what lay ahead for them, if they did not
straighten out their lives. What's happened where now the ONLY one's who
are 'Scared Straight' are those who live in the community and worry
whether they will have to dodge bullets?
Some may say that the following suggestions are a bit "outrageous" or
even "impossible". There could be possible legal issues that would have
to be dealt with but that's why we
elect our "representatives". So, why not bring back or create similar
programs? This time, possibly through the courts/probation, add
MANDATORY conditions where, for example, the young offender is made to
attend the funeral of one in his/her age group. Or, the young offender
is made to attend an autopsy. Let them see what awaits them should they
continue walking down the path of darkness and hopelessness.
As stated before there could be possible legal issues that would have to
be dealt with, in particular where the autopsy is concerned. However, it
is NOT ridiculous nor impossible! "The Madness" that has created this epidemic is not based on logic,
conventional thinking, or common sense. Therefore, why not use logic, unconventional methods, and common sense to rid ourselves of
"The Madness"?
Just a thought!
